Never met a manager who never makes decisions. My first no-decision boss

If you have never met a manager who never makes decisions it is impossible to believe that they can exist. This is exactly what I thought until the moment I met my first one: a no-decision manager.

He was a European Director and I was working in headquarters with him. It took a while to come to the conclusion that he was never going to make a decision, and a lot of pestering on my part for the decisions that I needed to move forward in my work. With the pestering, came a vast dose of frustration while waiting. I made my own decision quickly, which was to get out of this situation as quickly as possible, so I quit.

He made me work too, in gathering additional information to make it easier for him to make the decision which he was never going to make. It was an excuse to delay decision-making but I didn’t know at the time. This also increased my frustration level. Working for nothing!

These managers do exist. I have worked with eight of them. Now that you know, watch out for them. I estimate, with no evidence other than my experience with them, that if you work in an organisation with more than 500 people, you will meet one at least once in your career.
