A no-decision colleague working for a no-decision boss

A no-decision colleague whose boss was a no-decision manager himself. I worked for a time with both. How about that for a chaotic situation?

Headquarters decided to promote a no-decision manger into our management team. This, I thought, is going to be a disaster for my no-decision colleague. He doesn’t make decisions and neither does his boss.

I decided to help. First I worked closely with him and his team, but I stopped at making decisions in his place, so my help turned out to be of no use. All it did was give my colleague a shoulder to cry on. Then I contacted HR and tried to persuade them to appoint a coach to assist our no-decision colleague. At least I thought, with this, some of the simple decisions would be made. But no, HR decided not to intervene, despite the fact that they knew he was a no-decision manager.

Finally it wasn’t as chaotic at all. Everyone went about their management ways not making decisions and until a crisis erupted. Expenses suddenly went way over budget with the lack of management intervention.
