What do they do all day? Talk to people not looking for a decision.

No-decision managers. What do they do all day? One of my no-decision managers was the busiest manager I have ever met.

He spent all his time, talking to people in the organisation who were not looking for a decision. His agenda was full for weeks in advance. His subordinates, myself included, could never get a meeting with him. He was just not available, and so never had to make a decision. I am exaggerating of course, because we did get to talk to him from time to time, but that was what it felt like working for him. He was an absent manager.

He was as popular and as well-known as my public speaker no-decision manager (see previous post) so equally effective. The principles were the same, the activity was just different. It was an activity which did not require decision-making. He used it to promote himself as a great manager with every one he talked to and was considered an expert in the company, which he enhanced by talking to so many people!
