Working with a manager who never makes decisions. My first no-decision colleague, how was I going to work with him?

I decided to work closely with him to see what would happen. Shortly after his promotion, he was asked to prepare an analysis of the rapidly changing market and propose a new organisation to accompany the change

His report was brilliant and his analysis of the changing market was spot on. He made several different propositions of possible new organisations, but without a specific recommendation, and sent his report to headquarters for approval. Headquarters were impressed. But they replied with a request which is terrifying for any no-decision manager. They told him to decide on his own. He could choose any one of the different solutions he had put in his report and then implement it. The one he thought was the best for the company. As a true no-decision manager this was of course impossible.

I spent hours with him discussing the advantages and inconveniences of each of his proposals in an attempt to help him decide. He just did nothing and was unable to select one. After a few months of indecision management decided to fire him for not deciding.
